Her birthplace was St. Louis and moved rapidly into New York City when she was just a couple of days old. She earned an art history certificate at Barnard College in 1991. In the same year, she was hired as an intern at An American Place restaurant for one year. Guarnaschelli started her cooking education by watching her mother modify cookbooks and try recipes. Her culinary experience began when she watched her mother test recipes in her kitchen while editing cookbooks. Guarnaschelli eventually became the executive chef at Butter. Guarnaschelli appeared on the Food Network's Iron Chef America where she took on Cat Cora in the Farmers Market Battle of 2007. Following her appearance as a judge on the show, in 2011 she participated in The Next Iron Chef's fourth season wherein she placed third. She competed and lost in an episode of Food Network Challenge Ultimate Thanksgiving Feast. In the fourth season of The Next Iron Chef, she began working as a sous chef to Iron Chef Geoffrey Zakarian.
